I work at the Department of Human Biology. My research focuses on understanding how fat metabolism is regulated in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle and the liver, and how alterations in these processes are related to the development of insulin resistance and muscle atrophy. The mechanisms that underlie the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are not fully elucidated.
I graduated as a professional nurse (HogeSchool Heerlen) in 2003, and obtained my Masters degree in Movement Sciences in 2005 (University Maastricht). In 2011, I succesfully defended my PhD thesis 'Lipid accumulation in skeletal muscle; big deal?!'
