Lisa Mennens is a joint PhD-candidate within the Department of Human Biology at the Maastricht University Medical Centre+ (MUMC+) and the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy at Hasselt University. Her research project called “message in a bubble” focuses on adipocyte-derived extracellular vesicles as metabolic regulators in obesity-related insulin resistance. The primary objective of this project is to investigate the sex-dependent role of adipocyte-derived extracellular vesicles on skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity by making use human primary adipocyte and myotube cell cultures. In 2019, Lisa obtained her BSc in Biomedical Sciences at Hasselt University. Subsequently, in 2021, she completed her MSc in Biomedical Sciences with a specialization in genetics. In 2022, she received a grant for fundamental research from the Flanders Research Foundation (FWO) to continue her project.
